About Me

I am Jen Burke – CEO and janitor of the San Francisco design firm Industry. I often also answer to the titles of visual designer, information architect, user interface developer, theme builder, programmer, writer, editor, and accessibility compliance expert. My favorite title is team member. Over the years I have had the honor of working on large and ambitious projects where the sum is truly bigger than the parts. I am also entirely content realizing inner visions in blissful isolation. I enjoy working both wide — across all aspects of a project — and deep — bringing a wealth of visual design education, training, and experience to the table. At heart, I am a problem solver. Whether designing, writing, or coding, I strive for brevity and clarity. My work has been characterized as elegant, precise, witty, and timeless.

Jennifer Burke has a Master of Fine Arts in Graphic Design from the Rhode Island School of Design, a Bachelor of Arts in Visual Design from the University of California, Berkeley, and far-reaching professional design experience. Prior to founding Industry, she was a visual information designer on projects for the USDA, the World Bank, and — while living in Tokyo — Nikon, Yamaha, and NEC. In her spare time she is an award-winning amateur chef and recipe developer (Scharffen Berger 2010/2012/2013, Vegetarian Times, Old Farmer’s Almanac 2009/2017), a Quora Top Writer on matters grammatical, a data science student in BerkeleyX Data8, and the author of Party Trap (Poltroon Press), a slim volume of palindromic poetry.

About This Site

This site was intended to be temporary: I had pulled the plug on the previous site after a decade of neglect, hoping to light an under-arse fire that would inspire a whole new design and architecture. In the interim — having grown weary of fussy portfolio sites and gratuitous hero headers — I would opt for a big, minimalist approach, using lazy load javascript to deliver images at drive-by speed. The positive response suggested that less is more, so the site remains. PS: If you are one of the site's many Jennifer's Javascript MasterMind groupies, you can still find the game in its usual location.

Are we inspired yet?
